Why family contact matters

Loneliness deserves attention.
So does staying connected.

Loneliness and reduced social contact are linked with depressive symptoms among residents in long-term care. Family contact can be part of a wider network of support, alongside friendships, meaningful activities, staff relationships, and appropriate care.

Family visits · 2023 review

Family contact is one important factor.

An integrative review found a relationship between lack of family visits and depression in residential aged care. It also identified other influences, including health, adjustment to the residence, culture, activities, and staff involvement.

Family video contact · 2011 study

Seeing familiar faces can matter.

A Taiwanese study of 90 nursing-home residents evaluated family video conversations added to usual visits. The intervention group showed greater reductions in loneliness and depressive symptoms over follow-up than the comparison group.

This studied scheduled, live video contact—not LoveYou360 or saved capsules. Its results support researching ways to maintain family contact; they are not a product treatment claim.
