Your presence matters

Do you often work late evenings? Night shift? Drive long haul?

Being away from home can be hard for children to understand. You're doing your best to earn a living for them, but they still need to know they matter. When work keeps you away during their time at home, staying close takes extra effort. Research links some night-work schedules and reduced family connection with greater risks of acting out, drinking, smoking, and early sexual activity. Separate studies link a father's absence from the household with higher teenage-pregnancy risk. These are serious consequences. Don't wait for problems to appear before making time for connection. Get LoveYou360 and let them know you care.

Work schedules & children

Night work is linked to higher risks of emotional and behavioral problems in children.

The consequences can reach beyond missed dinners and bedtimes. A review of 23 studies found that 21 linked nonstandard work schedules to at least one adverse child outcome. Reported outcomes included emotional and behavioral problems, poorer cognitive development, and higher body mass index. Reduced parent-child interaction and closeness were among the pathways linking work schedules to these risks.

Make staying connected a priority. Listen to their worries, ask about their day, and keep reminding them they matter to you.

Teen behavior & substance use

Mothers’ night work is linked to increased risks of teen drinking, smoking, acting out, and early sexual activity.

A longitudinal study linked mothers’ night work to less time with children and a less supportive home environment. Those pathways were associated with drinking, delinquency, and early sexual activity at ages 13–14. Smoking risks also appeared in some groups.

Know what is happening in their lives. The same study found lower risks with some schedules that allowed parents to stay better informed about their children’s whereabouts.

Father absence & teenage pregnancy

Girls growing up without their father face higher risks of early sex and teenage pregnancy.

The risk can show up in adolescence. Two studies following girls from childhood to about age 18 linked greater exposure to father absence with earlier sexual activity and teenage pregnancy. The association remained even after researchers accounted for other disadvantages.

These findings concern fathers absent from the household. They show why sustained parental involvement deserves serious attention.

Parenting & risky choices

Parental support and clear rules are linked to less drinking, smoking, cannabis use, and early sex.

Your support and boundaries matter. A study of adolescents linked supportive parenting and clear rules with lower risks of drinking, smoking, cannabis use, and early sexual activity. Stay involved. Ask questions, listen to the answers, and make your expectations clear.

Use messages to keep the conversation going, alongside time together and active parenting. These studies did not test LoveYou360.
